CNC Cutting Board Creation: A Success Story

Finally, I finished my cutting board. This was completely fabricated with my CNC. Except for the final sanding and finishing.

You remember from my last post, When I was cutting this out, I encountered a catastrophic failure. I had to order parts. Luckily they weren’t costly. I then tried to recenter my cutter and continue where I left off. That didn’t work!

After a couple of days off, I prepared the material and today I tried it again. This time I had success! The machine cut out the board the way I expected. The plan was to leave the board connected to the waste by 6 tabs. These tabs would keep the project centered in the stock. THe tabs were easy to cut through with a hand saw and sand away.

I then eased the edges with the sander. I didn’t want the cutting board to cut the user. Just as bad would be to have a splinter embedded in a finger or the food being cut. A user injury would give a new meaning to the term “cutting board”.

The next step in the project was to sand to 150 grit and apply the finish. The finish is Butcher Block Oil. I will never get tired of marveling at the transformation in a piece of wood when the finish is applied. You can tell by the picture that the spalted grain in the maple beautified the project.

Feedback on this project would give me ideas to use in future projects. If you liked this article, consider subscribing! Thank you!
