My CNC has been operational for over a week. Today, I started my second project; a cutting board. This board is being made from maple! Actually, it’s made from spalted maple. Again, not knowing what to expect, I maintained my distance in case of a catastrophic failure. I got my catastrophic failure!
The collet came apart! Luckily the router bit buried itself in the workpiece with the deformed collet still surrounding the bit. I am not sure why I experienced the failure! If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
I have ordered a new collet for my router. They will arrive Friday. Using an abundance of caution, I will buy a new bit tomorrow. Saturday, I will try to resume where I left off. The chances of me setting the same 0 point as I had is small! Will close enough work? If anyone has any thoughts about this, I really want to hear from you.
The workpiece is still clamped to the bed of the CNC so at least that hasn’t changed. It improves the likelihood that I’ll replicate the toolpath.
When I finish the project, I’ll let you know if I had a total failure of if I salvaged the wood and completed the project.
