CNC Assembly Experience: Tips and Challenges

This week I took delivery of my new Next Wave CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine. With this machine I will be capable of making items and parts that I could not make by hand. It will also allow me to easily personalize and customize the items that I make. I wanted a band saw before getting a CNC. However, this machine had a significant rebate.

Today I unboxed my CNC! First off, let me say that I came in more boxes than I imagined. The boxes were also significantly larger that I expected. While unboxing, I was looking for the manuals. I really needed the assembly instructions. When I found them, I discovered that I could not assemble this by myself.

Tomorrow is Sunday! After church, my daughter and her husband are coming over. He will help me!

Wow! Today is Thursday! I got the help I needed. On Monday, the assembly didn’t look right. It didn’t behave like I thought it would either.

On Tuesday, I corrected an assembly mistake. To my surprise, that fix corrected the problem. Now for a real smoke test. Make something!

The owner’s manual has three projects. I did project number 1. A tool holder. I was surprised at the amount of fine dust. I mean really fine dust! I don’t know if the dust was because of the tool or the material (I used MDF). Cleaning it up was tedious.

As I learn how to use the machine and design projects, I will post further articles! This is going to be a fun learning experience.
